The Application Process from Nigeria
The process follows the standard overseas application process with Nigeria-specific considerations:
- Get your TB test at an approved IOM clinic
- Obtain a police clearance certificate if required
- Complete the online application on GOV.UK
- Pay fees and IHS
- Upload documents
- Attend biometrics at VFS Global in Lagos or Abuja
- Wait for the decision
English Language Requirement
Despite English being Nigeria's official language, Nigeria is NOT on the UKVI list of majority English-speaking countries. This means Nigerian applicants must pass an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS Life Skills at A1 level for the initial spouse visa application. If you hold a degree that was taught in English from a recognised institution, you may be able to use this as evidence instead.
For ILR, B1 level English is required, and you will also need to pass the Life in the UK test. See the English language guide for the full list of exempt nationalities.
TB Test
Nigeria is on the TB testing list. You must get a TB test certificate from an approved IOM clinic. Clinics operate in Lagos and Abuja. The certificate is valid for 6 months — ensure your visa application is submitted within this window.
Police Clearance Certificate
A police clearance certificate from the Nigeria Police Force may be required. Apply through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Processing can take several weeks, so start this early in your preparation.
