How the Skilled Worker Visa Salary Works
The Skilled Worker visa has two salary requirements. You must meet both:
- The general salary threshold — currently £38,700 per year.
- The going rate for your occupation — a minimum salary set by the Home Office for each SOC code.
You must earn whichever is higher. For example, if the going rate for your job is £54,700 (like software developers), the £38,700 general threshold is irrelevant — you need to meet £54,700.
For more detail, see our salary threshold guide.
New Entrant Discounts
If you are under 26, switching from a Student visa or Graduate route, or in a recognised professional training programme, you qualify as a new entrant. The salary requirement is reduced to 70% of the going rate, with a floor of £30,960.
The new entrant rate applies for the first 4 years on a Skilled Worker visa. After that, you must meet the standard rate.
Immigration Salary List
Some roles appear on the Immigration Salary List (formerly the Shortage Occupation List). These roles benefit from a lower going rate (typically 80% of the standard rate) and reduced visa fees. The list is reviewed regularly by the Migration Advisory Committee.
What This Tool Does Not Cover
This tool shows the most common eligible occupations. It does not replace the official list. Some things to keep in mind:
- Job duties matter more than job titles. Your employer must select the SOC code that matches the actual duties of the role.
- The official list changes periodically. Always check GOV.UK for the current version.
- Health and education workers may have specific salary rules linked to national pay scales.
