Current Processing Times
The UK Spouse Visa processing time depends on where you apply from and whether you pay for priority processing.
Applying From Outside the UK
Standard processing takes up to 24 weeks (approximately 6 months). This is the time from when you submit your biometrics and supporting documents to when you receive a decision. During busy periods, some applications take longer.
Applying From Inside the UK
If you are already in the UK on another visa and are switching to a Spouse Visa, standard processing takes up to 8 weeks. Your existing leave is extended automatically while your application is pending (known as "Section 3C leave"), so you can continue living and working in the UK.
Priority Processing (Inside UK)
- Priority: Decision within 5 working days. Cost: approximately £500.
- Super priority: Decision by the next working day. Cost: approximately £800-£1,000.
Priority Processing (Outside UK)
Priority services from outside the UK vary by visa application centre. Where available, priority service aims to deliver a decision within 6 weeks. Not all centres offer priority services for Spouse Visa applications.
What Happens During Processing
After you submit your Spouse Visa application, the Home Office:
- Checks that your application is complete and all required documents are provided.
- Verifies your identity and biometric information.
- Assesses whether you meet the financial requirement.
- Reviews evidence of your genuine relationship.
- Checks your immigration history and any previous applications.
- Conducts security and criminal record checks.
If the caseworker needs additional information, they may contact you. This is known as a "Request for Information" and will pause the processing clock.
Common Causes of Delays
Several factors can cause your Spouse Visa application to take longer than expected:
- Incomplete applications: Missing documents or unanswered questions are the most common cause of delays. Use our documents checklist to make sure you have everything.
- Complex financial evidence: Self-employment income, combined income sources, or savings-based applications require more time to verify.
- Previous refusals or complications: If you have been refused before or have a complex immigration history, your case may need more detailed review.
- High application volumes: Processing times tend to be longer during peak periods.
- Security checks: Some nationalities or backgrounds trigger additional security checks that can take several weeks.

How to Check Your Application Status
While your application is being processed, you can check its status:
- From outside the UK: Contact the visa application centre where you submitted your application. Some centres have online tracking systems.
- From inside the UK: Use the Home Office online enquiry form to check the progress of your application.
- Through your solicitor: If you used an immigration solicitor, they can make enquiries on your behalf.

Tips to Avoid Delays
- Submit a complete application with all required documents from the start.
- Make sure all documents are clearly legible and in English (or translated).
- Ensure your financial evidence clearly shows you meet the income threshold.
- Double-check that names and dates match across all documents.
- Respond to any Home Office requests for information as quickly as possible.
- Consider priority processing if time is critical.
What If Your Application Is Taking Too Long?
If your application has exceeded the stated processing time:
- Use the Home Office online enquiry form to ask for an update.
- Contact your Member of Parliament (MP) and ask them to raise the matter with the Home Office.
- If you used a solicitor, ask them to chase the application.
- In extreme cases, you may be able to apply for a judicial review, but this is expensive and should be a last resort. See our visa refused guide for more on challenging decisions.
