Step 1: Identify the Right Test

Different visa routes require different test levels. Check the GOV.UK approved SELT list for your specific route:

  • Spouse visa (initial): A1 speaking and listening
  • ILR and citizenship: B1 speaking and listening
  • Skilled Worker: B1 in all four skills
  • Student visa: B2 in all four skills

See our English level comparison for what each level means.

Step 2: Find a Test Centre

Test centres are located across the UK and in many countries worldwide. Each test provider has a centre finder on their website:

  • IELTS for UKVI: Book through the British Council or IDP
  • Trinity ISE: Book through Trinity College London
  • LanguageCert: Book through the LanguageCert website

Step 3: Book Your Test

  1. Visit the test provider's website
  2. Select the correct test type and level
  3. Choose your test centre and date
  4. Register your personal details (matching your passport exactly)
  5. Pay the test fee
  6. Receive your booking confirmation

Step 4: Prepare

  • Download sample tests from the provider's website
  • Practice regularly, focusing on your weakest skills
  • Take English classes if needed
  • Familiarise yourself with the test format
  • Practice timing yourself
