ESOL Courses
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses are offered by further education colleges and adult education centres across the UK. They are the main structured route for learning English as an immigrant.
Courses are available at all levels from complete beginner (pre-entry) to advanced. They cover:
- Speaking and pronunciation
- Listening comprehension
- Reading and writing
- Grammar and vocabulary
- Everyday life skills in English
Find ESOL courses through the National Careers Service.
Funding and Fees
ESOL classes may be free if you are:
- On a low income and receiving certain benefits
- A refugee or have humanitarian protection
- An asylum seeker who has been waiting more than 6 months
- Earning below a certain threshold
If you do not qualify for fully funded classes, subsidised fees are usually available. The Adult Education Budget funds ESOL provision in England.
Community Classes
Many community groups, charities, and religious organisations run free or low-cost English conversation classes. These are often less formal than ESOL courses but provide valuable speaking practice and social connection.
Check your local library, community centre, or places of worship for listings.

Online Learning
Free online resources include:
- BBC Learning English: Free courses, videos, and podcasts
- British Council LearnEnglish: Interactive courses and resources
- Duolingo: Free app for structured daily practice
- FutureLearn: Free online courses from UK universities
Online learning works well alongside classroom-based ESOL courses for faster progress.
Preparing for Immigration Tests
ESOL classes can help prepare you for the English language tests required for immigration:
- English for ILR (B1 level)
- English for citizenship (B1 level)
- SELT booking and preparation
Tell your ESOL teacher that you are preparing for a SELT test. They may be able to focus on the skills and formats tested.
English for Employment
Better English improves your job prospects significantly. Some ESOL courses include vocational English (English for healthcare, construction, or customer service) which combines language learning with sector-specific skills.

Childcare During Classes
Many ESOL providers offer free or subsidised childcare during class times, recognising that parents (particularly mothers) may struggle to attend without it. Ask your provider about childcare options when you enrol.
