Do Singapore Citizens Need a UK Visitor Visa?
What you need to know
- •Singapore citizens do not need a UK visitor visa for trips of up to 6 months.
- •You do need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before you travel. It is a permit, not a visa.
- •A visit does not let you work, study long-term, or live in the UK.
- •No TB (tuberculosis) test is required. For work or study routes, the English requirement is usually met by an English-taught degree.
- •For longer stays, work, study, or settlement you need a proper visa route.
Singapore citizens are non-visa nationals, so they do not need a UK visitor visa for tourism or business trips of up to 6 months. Since 2025 they do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which is a cheap online travel permit. This guide explains the ETA, how long you can stay, and the routes you would use for longer stays, work, study, or settlement.

Do Singaporeans Need a Visa to Visit the UK?
No. If you hold a Singapore passport, you do not need a UK visitor visa for a short trip. Singapore citizens are what the UK calls "non-visa nationals." That means you can travel to the UK for tourism, business meetings, or to visit family without applying for a visa first.
Many people search for a "UK visitor visa Singapore" and assume they must apply for one. That is a common misunderstanding. For a normal holiday or business trip of up to 6 months, you do not.
There is one thing you do need from 2025 onwards: an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This is not a visa. It is a cheap online travel permit that is linked to your passport. The next section explains it.
What the ETA Is and How to Get It
An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital permission to travel to the UK. It was introduced for non-visa nationals like Singapore citizens. You must have an approved ETA before you board your flight.
You apply online or through the official UK ETA app. You scan your passport, take a photo, answer a few questions, and pay a small fee. Most decisions come back within minutes, though it can take up to 3 working days. Apply at least a few days before you travel.
One ETA covers multiple trips over its validity period, so you do not reapply for every visit. Fees and validity can change, so for the exact current cost check GOV.UK.
For a full walkthrough, read our complete UK ETA guide, the ETA application process, and use the do I need an ETA checker. You can also confirm Singapore on the ETA countries list.
How Long You Can Stay, and Visitor Do's and Don'ts
As a visitor you can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months per trip. This applies whether you enter under an ETA or, in other cases, a visitor visa.
You can do plenty of things as a visitor. You can sightsee, see family and friends, attend meetings and conferences, and do short business activities such as negotiating deals. You can also do a short course of study of up to 6 months.
There are firm limits. You cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK business. You cannot claim public funds. You cannot live in the UK through frequent back-to-back visits. You cannot marry or register a civil partnership unless you hold the correct visitor category for it.
For more detail, see our UK visitor visa guide, visitor visa requirements, and the visitor work restrictions. If you have a genuine reason to stay longer, read about a visitor visa extension.
When You Do Need a Real Visa
The ETA only covers short visits. You need a proper UK visa in several situations.
You need a visa if you want to stay longer than 6 months. You need one if you plan to do paid work for a UK employer. You need one if you want to study a course that lasts longer than 6 months. You need one if you plan to settle, for example by joining a spouse or partner who lives in the UK.
In other words, the moment your plan shifts from "visiting" to "living, working, studying long-term, or settling," you move out of ETA territory and into the visa system.
If you are coming for business but are unsure whether your activities count as a visit, read our business visitor guide before you travel.

Main Longer-Term Routes for Singapore Citizens
If you want to stay in the UK for the long term, here are the routes Singaporeans most commonly use.
The Skilled Worker visa is for people with a job offer from a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence. It is the main work route.
The Global Talent visa is for leaders and promising talent in fields such as academia, research, arts, and technology. It does not need a job offer.
The Student visa is for courses longer than 6 months at a licensed UK education provider.
The spouse or partner visa is for joining a husband, wife, or partner who is British or settled in the UK. Several of these routes can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) over time. Note that Singapore is not a Youth Mobility Scheme partner, so that route is not open to Singapore citizens.
TB Test and English Requirement
Two requirements that catch out applicants from some countries are straightforward for Singapore citizens.
First, there is no TB (tuberculosis) test. The UK only requires a TB test from applicants who have been living in certain listed countries. Singapore is not on that list, so you do not need a TB certificate.
Second, the English requirement for work or study routes is usually easy for Singaporeans to meet. Singapore is not on the UK majority English-speaking list, so nationality alone does not satisfy it. However, because education in Singapore is in English, most people meet the requirement with a degree taught in English, and take an approved test only if their degree was not in English.
Transit Through the UK
If you are changing planes in the UK on the way somewhere else, the rules depend on your route.
If you stay airside, meaning you do not pass through UK border control, you may not need an ETA. If you cross the border, for example to change airports or to collect and recheck bags, you will normally need an ETA.
Because the detail depends on your airline and airports, confirm before you fly. Our UK transit and ETA guide explains the common scenarios.
Common Entry Pitfalls to Avoid
Most Singapore visitors enter the UK smoothly. A few avoidable mistakes cause problems at the border.
Do not travel without an approved ETA. The airline can refuse to let you board. Do not treat repeat visits as a way to live in the UK. Border officers look for people who spend more time in the UK than out of it. Do not arrive without proof of your plans. It helps to show return travel, where you are staying, and that you can support yourself.
Do not do anything that counts as work during a visit, even remotely for pay, unless it falls within the permitted business activities. If your real intention is to work or settle, apply for the correct visa rather than entering as a visitor.
Next Steps
For a short trip to the UK as a Singapore citizen, your action is simple. Check that your passport is valid, apply for your ETA online a few days before you travel, and keep proof of your plans handy at the border.

When you are unsure whether you even need permission for a specific trip, the official tool is the safest starting point: check what you need on GOV.UK.
