Do US Citizens Need a UK Visitor Visa?
What you need to know
- •US citizens are non-visa nationals and do not need a UK visitor visa for visits of up to 6 months.
- •Since 2025 you do need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), a cheap online permit linked to your passport.
- •You need a proper visa only for paid work, study over 6 months, marriage, or settling in the UK.
- •As a US citizen you do not need a TB (tuberculosis) test and you are exempt from the English language test.
- •US citizens are not eligible for the Youth Mobility Scheme.
US citizens do not need a UK visitor visa for tourism or business trips of up to 6 months. Since 2025, you do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which is a low-cost online travel permit, not a visa. You only need an actual visa for longer stays, paid work, study over 6 months, marriage, or settlement.

Do Americans Need a Visa to Visit the UK?
No. If you hold a United States passport, you do not need a UK visitor visa for a normal trip. Many people search for a "UK visitor visa for USA" and assume they must apply for one. In most cases you do not.
US citizens are what the UK calls "non-visa nationals". This means you can travel to the UK for tourism, business meetings, or other short visits without applying for a visa in advance. You can stay for up to 6 months per visit.
There is one thing you do need from 2025 onwards: an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). This is not a visa. It is a quick, low-cost online travel permit. We explain it in the next section.
What Is the ETA and How Do You Get One?
The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital travel permission that you must have before you fly to the UK. It is linked electronically to your passport. You do not get a physical document or a sticker in your passport.
The ETA is similar to the US ESTA system. If you have used ESTA, the UK ETA will feel familiar. It costs a low fixed fee. For the exact current price, check GOV.UK before you apply, as fees can change.
How to Apply for Your ETA
- Download the official UK ETA app, or apply on the GOV.UK website.
- Scan your US passport using your phone camera.
- Take a photo of yourself when asked.
- Answer a few simple screening questions.
- Pay the fee with a debit or credit card.
- Wait for your decision. Most are approved within minutes, but it can take up to 3 working days.
Apply at least 3 working days before you travel. For full details, see our guide to the ETA application process, and read our complete ETA guide. If you are unsure whether you need one, our do I need an ETA checker gives a quick answer.
How Long Can You Stay, and What Can You Do?
As a US citizen visiting with an ETA, you can normally stay for up to 6 months per visit. This is the standard visitor limit. The ETA itself stays valid for multiple trips during its validity period, but each single visit is capped at 6 months.
What You Can Do as a Visitor
- Tourism, sightseeing, and holidays
- Visiting family and friends
- Business meetings, conferences, and negotiations
- Short courses of study, up to 6 months
- Private medical treatment
- Transit through the UK to another country
What You Cannot Do
- Work for a UK employer, whether paid or unpaid
- Run or set up a business based in the UK
- Study for longer than 6 months
- Live in the UK or make it your main home
- Claim public funds or benefits
- Marry or register a civil partnership (this needs a separate Marriage Visitor visa)
For more detail on the limits, read our guide on visitor visa work restrictions and the rules for a business visit.
When Do You Actually Need a UK Visa?
The ETA only covers short visits. You need a proper visa if your plans go beyond a normal visitor trip. As a US citizen, you need a visa if you want to:
- Work in the UK for a UK employer
- Study a course that lasts longer than 6 months
- Marry and settle in the UK, or join a partner or spouse who lives here
- Live in the UK long term or settle permanently
- Stay in the UK for longer than 6 months at a time
In these cases the ETA is not enough. You apply for the specific visa that matches your plan before you travel, or in some cases switch into it from inside the UK. We cover the main routes below.
If you only want to stay a little longer as a visitor, options are very limited. Read our guide on extending a visitor visa to understand the strict rules.

Main Long-Term Routes for Americans
If you want to move to the UK rather than just visit, here are the routes US citizens use most often.
Skilled Worker Visa
The Skilled Worker visa is the main route for working in the UK. You need a job offer from a UK employer who holds a sponsor licence. The job must meet a minimum skill and salary level.
Global Talent Visa
The Global Talent visa is for leaders or promising talent in fields such as science, research, engineering, arts, and digital technology. You do not need a job offer, but you usually need to be endorsed by an approved UK body.
Student Visa
The Student visa is for courses longer than 6 months at a licensed UK education provider. You need a confirmed place on a course and enough money to support yourself.
Spouse or Partner Visa
The spouse or partner visa is for joining a partner who is a British citizen or settled in the UK. You must meet a financial requirement and prove your relationship is genuine.
After living in the UK for a qualifying period on most of these routes, you may be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which lets you stay permanently.
No TB Test and No English Test Needed
Two common worries do not apply to US citizens.
No TB (Tuberculosis) Test
Some applicants must take a TB (tuberculosis) test as part of a visa application. This applies only to people who have been living in certain listed countries. The United States is not on that list. So if you are coming from the US, you do not need a TB test.
No English Language Test
Many work and study visas require you to prove your English. The United States is on the UK list of majority English-speaking countries. Because of this, you are exempt from the English language test on routes such as the Skilled Worker visa. You usually prove this with your US passport.
Always confirm the exact requirements for your route on GOV.UK before you apply, as rules can change.
Transit Through the UK
If you are passing through the UK on your way to another country, whether you need an ETA depends on your route.
- Airside transit: If you stay inside the airport and do not pass through UK border control, you may not need an ETA.
- Landside transit: If you pass through UK border control, for example to change airports or collect bags, you do need an ETA.
If you are not sure, it is safer to apply for an ETA. For full detail, read our guide on transiting through the UK.
Common Entry and Refusal Pitfalls
Even though US citizens do not need a visitor visa, you can still be refused entry at the UK border. A Border Force officer makes the final decision. Watch out for these common problems.
- Spending too much time in the UK: The visitor route is for visits, not for living here. If you spend most of the year in the UK across repeated trips, an officer may decide you are really trying to live here and refuse entry.
- Hidden work: Doing paid work for a UK employer on a visitor trip is not allowed. Be clear about why you are visiting.
- No return plans: It helps to show you have a reason to leave, such as a return flight, a job, or a home back in the US.
- Wrong route for your plan: If you really intend to study long term, work, or settle, use the correct visa. Trying to do these things as a visitor can lead to refusal.
- No valid ETA: An airline can stop you from boarding if you do not have an approved ETA. Apply before you travel.

Next Steps
If you are a US citizen planning a normal trip to the UK, you do not need a visitor visa. You need an ETA. Apply for it at least 3 working days before you travel.
If you want to work, study long term, marry, or settle in the UK, you need the right visa instead. Start by checking your options with the GOV.UK visa checker.
