Application Process from South Africa

The process follows the standard overseas application:

  • Get your TB test at an approved IOM clinic
  • Take the English language test if required (check exemption list)
  • Obtain a SAPS police clearance if required
  • Complete the online application on GOV.UK
  • Pay fees and IHS
  • Upload documents and attend biometrics at VFS Global

English Language

English is one of South Africa's official languages and is widely spoken. However, South Africa is NOT on the UKVI list of majority English-speaking countries, so you must prove English proficiency. For the initial spouse visa application, you need to pass an A1 level approved SELT test.

Alternatively, if you hold a degree taught or researched in English from a recognised South African university, you can use ENIC verification to satisfy the requirement. See the English language guide.

TB Test

South Africa is on the TB testing list. Get your certificate from an approved IOM clinic. Clinics are available in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban. The certificate is valid for 6 months.

Police Clearance

A SAPS Police Clearance Certificate may be required. Apply at your local SAPS office. You will need fingerprints taken and submitted to the Criminal Record Centre. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks but can take longer. Apply early.

Documents

  • Marriage certificate: From the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). Ensure it is an unabridged certificate.
  • Birth certificate: Unabridged birth certificate from DHA.
  • Passport: Valid South African passport.
  • Financial evidence: Based on the UK sponsor's income. See income requirement.

South African documents in English generally do not need translation. Documents in Afrikaans or other official languages need certified English translations.

Processing Times

Standard processing from South Africa takes 12-24 weeks. Check priority service availability. See processing times 2026.

Next Steps

Get your TB test, police clearance, and English test (if required). Prepare unabridged certificates from DHA. Apply online and book biometrics at VFS Global.
