Updated 27 March 20268 min read

What you need to know

ILR requirements are universal, but certain nationality-specific factors matter: document translation, English language exemptions, dual citizenship rules, and community support networks. This hub connects you to country-specific guidance and addresses common questions by nationality.

Country-Specific ILR Guides

We have created dedicated ILR guides for nationals of the following countries:

For country-specific guides on moving to the UK, see our moving to the UK hub which covers India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and many more.

Document Translation

If your supporting documents (marriage certificates, birth certificates, qualifications) are not in English, they must be accompanied by certified translations. See our translation guide.

English Language Exemptions

Nationals of majority English-speaking countries on the UKVI list are exempt from the English language test. These include the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, and several others. Note: Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya are NOT on this list despite English being widely spoken there. See our English exemptions for ILR guide.

If you are not from an exempt country, you need B1 English. See our IELTS guide.

Dual Citizenship Considerations

After ILR, many people proceed to British citizenship. The UK allows dual citizenship, but your home country may not. Countries that restrict dual citizenship include some in South Asia, the Middle East, and East Asia. Always check before applying.

Community Support

Connecting with others from your country can provide invaluable support during the ILR process. Most UK cities have well-established community organisations. See our community groups guide.

General ILR Guidance

For the universal ILR requirements that apply to all nationalities, see:

For official ILR guidance, visit GOV.UK: indefinite leave to remain.

This guide is general information, not immigration advice. Immigration rules change frequently. For advice on your specific situation, consult an OISC-registered adviser or immigration solicitor. Always check GOV.UK for the latest rules.
