British Citizenship for Philippine Nationals: Complete Guide
What you need to know
- •You lose Philippine citizenship upon becoming British, but can reacquire it under RA 9225.
- •The UK allows dual nationality. You can hold both passports after reacquisition.
- •Philippine degrees taught in English may satisfy the English language requirement.
- •PSA-authenticated documents are preferred for your citizenship application.
Filipino nationals can become British citizens through naturalisation after meeting standard residency requirements. Philippine citizenship is lost upon acquiring foreign citizenship, but can be reacquired under RA 9225. This guide covers the full process, dual nationality rules, and Philippines-specific document requirements.

Dual Citizenship: Philippines and the UK
The dual citizenship situation for Filipino nationals is unique. Under Philippine law, a Filipino who voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship automatically loses their Philippine citizenship. This means that when you become a British citizen, you technically lose your Philippine citizenship at that moment.
However, Republic Act 9225 (the Citizenship Retention and Re-acquisition Act of 2003) allows former Filipino citizens to reacquire their Philippine citizenship. You can apply through the Philippine Embassy in London. The process involves:
- Taking an oath of allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines
- Submitting an application with supporting documents
- Paying the processing fee
Once your application is approved, you are a dual citizen of both the Philippines and the UK. The UK permits dual nationality without restriction, so there is no issue from the British side.
The Path to British Citizenship
Filipino nationals follow the standard naturalisation route:
- Qualifying visa: Many Filipino nationals arrive on Skilled Worker visas (particularly in healthcare and care work), spouse visas, or other routes.
- Continuous residence: Complete the required period (typically 5 years on a work visa, or shorter on a spouse visa).
- ILR: Apply for indefinite leave to remain.
- Citizenship: After 12 months with ILR, apply for British citizenship.
English Language Requirement
Although English is an official language of the Philippines and widely spoken, Filipino nationals are not automatically exempt from the English language requirement for British citizenship. You can meet the requirement by:
- Providing evidence of a degree taught in English from a Philippine university recognised by UK ENIC
- Passing a Secure English Language Test at B1 level or above
Many Philippine universities teach in English, and degrees from major institutions such as the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle, and UST are often recognised. Check with UK ENIC to confirm your specific qualification.
Documents You Will Need
Filipino nationals should prepare:
- Philippine passport: Current and any previous passports
- PSA birth certificate: Authenticated by the Philippine Statistics Authority. This is preferred over locally registered birth certificates. If yours is not in English, get a certified translation
- BRP: Current Biometric Residence Permit
- Life in the UK test certificate
- English language evidence
- Proof of residence: Bank statements, payslips, utility bills
- Two referees: See our referees guide

Absence Rules
The Philippines is far from the UK, and flights can be expensive. Many Filipino nationals save up for longer trips home rather than frequent short visits. Be aware that extended trips count heavily against the absence limits:
- No more than 450 days absent in the 5 years before application
- No more than 90 days absent in the 12 months before application
A single month-long trip to the Philippines is manageable, but two or three such trips per year over several years can bring you close to the limits. Use our residence calculator guide to track your position.
Healthcare Workers: Special Considerations
A large number of Filipino nationals in the UK work in the NHS and social care sector. If you are a healthcare worker, you may benefit from:
- The Health and Care Worker visa, which has reduced fees and faster processing
- IHS exemption for Health and Care Worker visa holders
- Your employer may assist with visa and settlement applications as your sponsor
Your continuous service in the NHS also provides strong evidence of residence and good character for your citizenship application.
Applying for Citizenship
Apply online through GOV.UK. The fee is £1,344 including the ceremony fee. Processing takes approximately 6 months in 2026.
After approval, attend your citizenship ceremony and choose between the oath and affirmation.
