Common Routes to ILR

Bangladeshi nationals in the UK typically reach ILR through one of these routes:

Document Requirements

Bangladeshi documents used in UK immigration applications must be:

  • Translated: All documents in Bengali must be accompanied by a certified English translation. See our translation guide.
  • Verified: Documents such as marriage certificates and birth certificates may need to be verified. The Home Office may conduct verification checks with Bangladeshi authorities.
  • Current passport: Ensure your Bangladeshi passport is valid. If it is due to expire, renew it before applying for ILR through the Bangladesh High Commission in London.

English Language Requirement

ILR requires B1 English in speaking and listening. You can meet this through:

  • An approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or Trinity College London.
  • A degree taught or researched in English (including from Bangladeshi universities that teach in English, if on the approved list).

Bangladesh is not a majority English-speaking country, so nationals are not exempt from the test. Start preparing early if English is not your strongest skill. See our English classes guide.

Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK test is mandatory for ILR. It covers British history, culture, and values. The test is in English only. Study materials include the official handbook "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents" and various online practice tests.

See our Life in the UK test guide and study guide.

Practical Tips

  • Start planning early: Begin gathering documents and taking tests at least 6 months before your ILR qualifying date.
  • Keep travel records: Maintain a detailed record of all trips to Bangladesh and elsewhere. See our evidence of residence guide.
  • Tax compliance: Ensure your tax affairs are in order, particularly if you send remittances to Bangladesh. See our financial issues guide.
  • Community support: Bangladeshi community organisations across the UK can provide practical advice and support. See our community groups guide.

After ILR: Path to Citizenship

After receiving ILR, Bangladeshi nationals can apply for British citizenship. The UK allows dual citizenship, and Bangladesh also permits dual nationality, so you can hold both British and Bangladeshi citizenship.

For country-specific citizenship guidance, see our citizenship for Bangladeshi nationals guide.

This guide is general information, not immigration advice. Immigration rules change frequently. For advice on your specific situation, consult an OISC-registered adviser or immigration solicitor. Always check GOV.UK for the latest rules.
