The Global Talent visa offers one of the fastest routes to ILR in the UK. Exceptional talent holders can settle in just 3 years. This guide explains the requirements and process.

Qualifying Period
The time you must spend in the UK before applying for ILR depends on your endorsement category:
- Exceptional talent: 3 years of continuous residence
- Exceptional promise: 5 years of continuous residence
This makes the exceptional talent route one of the fastest paths to settlement in the UK, quicker than the Skilled Worker route (5 years) or the Ancestry visa route (5 years).
ILR Requirements
Continuous Residence
You must not have been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period. See the continuous residence guide and 180-day rule guide.
Life in the UK Test
You must pass the Life in the UK test. See our study guide.
English Language
Meet the English language requirement at B1 level. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries are exempt. From 26 March 2027 the settlement standard on the Global Talent route rises to B2 (upper intermediate).
Good Character
Meet the good character requirement. No serious criminal convictions or immigration offences.
Documents
See the ILR documents checklist. Key documents include your passport, your online immigration status (eVisa), your Life in the UK test certificate, English language evidence, and residence evidence.

Dependants
Your dependants can apply for ILR at the same time. They must meet the same continuous residence and knowledge of life requirements.
After ILR

Standard processing takes about 6 months. Priority and super priority services are available for faster decisions.

What do I need for ILR on the Global Talent visa?
You need to meet the continuous residence requirement, pass the Life in the UK test if you are aged 18 to 64, and meet the English language requirement. Settlement is also tested against the suitability rules. Good character is a citizenship requirement, not a settlement one.
