Biometrics for British Citizenship Applications

Updated 27 March 20267 min read

What you need to know

After submitting your citizenship application online, you must complete biometrics enrolment. This involves providing your fingerprints and photograph, either at a UKVCAS centre or via the smartphone app. Complete this promptly to avoid delays.

When to Complete Biometrics

Biometrics are completed after you submit your online citizenship application. Once you submit and pay, you will receive instructions on how to book a biometrics appointment or use the smartphone app.

Complete biometrics as soon as possible. The Home Office will not begin processing your application until biometrics are received. Aim to complete this within a few weeks of submission.

UKVCAS Centres

UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) centres are run by Sopra Steria and located across the UK. At your appointment:

  • Bring your passport and appointment confirmation
  • Your fingerprints are scanned digitally (all 10 fingers)
  • A digital photograph is taken
  • You may be asked to submit supporting documents

The appointment takes about 15-30 minutes. For detailed preparation advice, see our biometrics appointment guide.

Appointment Types

  • Standard (free): Included in your application fee. Book a slot at an available centre.
  • Priority: Costs around £100-£250 for an earlier slot.
  • Premium lounge: Walk-in same-day service for £300-£500.

For more on costs, see our biometrics fee guide.

The Smartphone App

If you have a biometric chip passport, you may be able to use the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app instead of visiting a centre. The app:

  • Scans the chip in your passport using your phone's NFC reader
  • Takes a selfie for identity verification
  • Can be completed from home in about 15 minutes

Not all citizenship applicants are eligible for the app. The system will tell you whether this option is available after you submit your application.

After Biometrics

Once biometrics are completed, the Home Office begins processing your citizenship application. Current processing times are typically 6-12 months. You can track your application online.

You do not need to surrender your passport during this time (unlike some older visa processes). Your passport remains with you.

Tips

  • Book your appointment as soon as you receive the link — popular centres fill up quickly
  • If using the app, ensure your phone has NFC capability and your passport has a biometric chip (look for the chip symbol on the cover)
  • If you have a disability or need reasonable adjustments, contact UKVCAS in advance
  • Children under 5 need a photograph only, not fingerprints
