What you need to know

British citizenship applications are submitted online through GOV.UK. The process involves completing the form, uploading documents, paying the fee, providing biometrics, and waiting for a decision. This guide explains each step so you know exactly what to expect.

Before You Start

Before opening the online form, gather everything you need:

  • Your current passport and any previous passports covering the last 5 years
  • Your BRP or eVisa details showing your ILR
  • Your Life in the UK test pass certificate (or booking reference)
  • English language test certificate or evidence of exemption
  • A complete record of your travel history (all trips in and out of the UK for the last 5 years)
  • Contact details of your two referees
  • A debit or credit card for the application fee

Use our documents checklist to make sure you have everything.

Step 1: Start the Application

Go to the GOV.UK citizenship application page and select the correct application type. For most people, this is "Apply for citizenship if you have indefinite leave to remain." Click "Start now" and create an account or sign in.

The form has multiple sections. You can save your progress at any point and return later. The system will not let you submit until all required fields are completed.

Step 2: Personal Details

Enter your personal information including:

  • Full name (as it appears on your passport)
  • Any previous names
  • Date and place of birth
  • Current nationality
  • Marital status
  • Address history for the last 5 years

If you want to change your name as part of the citizenship process, you can indicate this on the form.

Step 3: Residence and Travel History

This is the most important section. You must list every trip outside the UK in the last 5 years, including:

  • Departure date
  • Return date
  • Country visited
  • Reason for travel

Accuracy is critical. The Home Office checks your travel history against border records. Significant discrepancies can delay your application or raise good character concerns.

Step 4: Good Character Declaration

You must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, penalties, civil court judgments, tax disputes, or immigration breaches. See our guide on common application mistakes — failing to declare is one of the most frequent errors.

Step 5: Referees

Provide details of two referees who:

  • Are British citizens holding a British passport
  • Have known you personally for at least 3 years
  • Are not your solicitor, agent, or a family member
  • Are aged 25 or over

At least one referee should be a professional person (doctor, teacher, solicitor, etc.). The Home Office may contact your referees to verify.

Step 6: Pay and Submit

The application fee is currently £1,344 (check the latest fees). Pay by debit or credit card. If the fee is a hardship, check our fee waiver guide.

After payment, book your biometrics appointment through UKVCAS or use the smartphone app if eligible.

After Submission

Once submitted, the process is:

  • Biometrics enrolment (within 60 days of submission)
  • Home Office processing (typically 6-12 months)
  • Decision communicated by letter or email
  • If approved: book and attend a citizenship ceremony

You can track your application status online or contact the Home Office for updates.
