Updated 27 March 20268 min read

What you need to know

Visa application centres are run by commercial partners (VFS Global and TLScontact) on behalf of UKVI. You attend to provide biometrics and submit documents. Appointments must be booked in advance. This guide covers what to bring, what happens during the appointment, and premium services available.

Before Your Appointment

  1. Complete your online visa application on the GOV.UK visa application page
  2. Pay the visa fee and immigration health surcharge
  3. Book your VAC appointment through VFS Global or TLScontact
  4. Gather all required documents (see your visa-specific documents checklist)
  5. Print your appointment confirmation and application reference

At the Appointment

What happens during your visit:

  1. Arrive on time (or a few minutes early). Late arrivals may be turned away.
  2. Present your appointment confirmation and passport at reception
  3. Submit your biometrics: digital fingerprints of all 10 fingers and a digital photograph
  4. Hand in your supporting documents (if the centre requires physical submission)
  5. Receive a receipt and tracking information

The entire process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, though waiting times can be longer at busy centres.

Premium Services

Most VACs offer optional premium services for additional fees:

  • Priority processing: Faster decision times (not available for all visa types)
  • Document scanning: The VAC scans and returns your documents the same day
  • SMS notifications: Text updates on your application status
  • Courier return: Passport returned to you by courier rather than collection
  • Premium lounge: More comfortable waiting area at some centres

These services are optional and have no impact on the outcome of your application.

Tips for a Smooth Visit

  • Book your appointment well in advance, especially during summer and holiday periods
  • Arrive early but not too early — some centres have limited waiting space
  • Organise your documents clearly with an index or contents page
  • Ensure all translations are certified and complete
  • Do not bring unnecessary items — some centres have restrictions on phones and bags
  • If you have a TB test certificate, include it with your documents

After Your Appointment

Your application and biometrics are forwarded to UKVI for a decision. Processing times vary by visa type and country. Track your application through the VFS/TLScontact website. Once a decision is made, you will be notified to collect your passport (with the visa vignette if approved) or receive it by courier.

For biometrics inside the UK, the process is different (UKVCAS centres). See the GOV.UK VAC finder for centre locations.

Next Steps

Complete your online application, book your VAC appointment, and prepare your documents. On the day, arrive early and have everything organised.
