UK Visa Transit Requirements: Do You Need a Transit Visa?

Updated 27 March 20269 min read

What you need to know

Whether you need a UK transit visa depends on your nationality and whether you pass through border control. Some nationalities need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) to change flights without leaving the airside area. Others need a Visitor in Transit visa to pass through border control. This guide explains who needs what and how to apply.

Types of UK Transit

Airside Transit (No Border Control)

If your connecting flight departs from the same terminal or a connected airside area, and you do not need to collect luggage or leave the airport, you may transit without passing through UK border control. Most nationalities do not need a visa for this. However, nationals of certain countries need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV).

Transit Through Border Control

If you need to collect luggage, change terminals (where you must exit and re-enter), or leave the airport, you pass through UK border control. You need either a Visitor in Transit visa, a Standard Visitor visa, or visa-free entry rights.

Check the GOV.UK visa checker to see what you need.

Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)

The DATV is required by nationals of specific countries listed on GOV.UK. Key points:

  • Costs 35 pounds
  • Applied for at a visa application centre
  • You stay in the airside area and do not enter the UK
  • Processing time is usually around 3 weeks

DATV Exemptions

You do not need a DATV even if your nationality normally requires one if you hold:

  • A valid UK visa for another purpose
  • A valid US, Canadian, Australian, or New Zealand visa or residence permit
  • An EEA or Swiss residence permit
  • A valid uniform format Schengen visa

Visitor in Transit Visa

If you need to pass through UK border control during your journey:

  • Costs 64 pounds
  • Allows you to stay in the UK for up to 48 hours
  • You must be transiting to another country (not staying in the UK)
  • You need a confirmed onward booking

For longer stays, you may need a Standard Visitor visa instead.

Planning Your Transit

  • Check the GOV.UK visa checker well before booking flights
  • If you need a DATV or transit visa, apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel
  • Consider routing through a different airport or country if transit visas are complex or expensive
  • Ensure your luggage is checked through to your final destination if transiting airside
  • Carry all transit documents including onward boarding passes and visa proof

See the GOV.UK transit visa page for full details and the current list of nationalities requiring a DATV.

Next Steps

Use the GOV.UK visa checker to determine your transit requirements. If a visa is needed, apply well in advance of your travel date. Consider your routing options carefully.
