Advantages for American Students
US citizens have a simpler Student visa application compared to many nationalities:
- No English language test. The US is on the majority English-speaking country list.
- No TB test. The US is not on the TB-testing list.
- Short courses without a visa. Americans can study courses up to 6 months on a visitor entry without applying for a visa in advance.

Financial Evidence in USD
At approximately $1.27 per £1, the financial requirements are:
- London maintenance (9 months): approximately $17,500 (£13,761)
- Outside London (9 months): approximately $13,400 (£10,539)
- Plus outstanding tuition fees

UK vs US Study: Key Differences
- Duration: UK master's degrees are typically 1 year (vs 2 in the US). UK bachelor's degrees are 3 years (vs 4).
- Structure: UK courses are more specialised from the start. Less general education or electives.
- Assessment: More emphasis on final exams and dissertations, less on continuous assessment.
- Cost: International tuition at UK universities ranges from £15,000 to £45,000 per year for most courses.
After Your Studies
American graduates can use the Graduate route for 2 years (3 for PhD) of post-study work. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027 the Graduate route lasts 18 months, and PhD graduates keep 3 years. You can also switch to a Skilled Worker visa or return to the US. See our switching guide.
