eVisa Transition and British Citizenship Applications

What you need to know

The UK's transition from BRPs to eVisas is changing how immigration status is recorded and shared. For citizenship applicants, this means setting up a UKVI account, understanding how to prove your status digitally, and knowing what to expect after becoming British.

What Is the eVisa Transition

The UK is replacing physical immigration documents (like the BRP) with digital records called eVisas. Your immigration status is stored electronically and accessed through a UKVI account.

This change is being rolled out gradually. If you still hold a valid BRP, it continues to work, but you should set up your UKVI account to prepare for the transition.

Impact on Citizenship Applications

The eVisa transition affects citizenship applications in several ways:

  • Proving ILR: When you apply for citizenship, you need to prove you hold ILR. This can now be done through your digital status rather than relying solely on a physical BRP.
  • Immigration history: Your UKVI account shows your full immigration history, which the Home Office accesses when processing your application.
  • Biometrics: Biometric data is linked to your digital record, replacing the chip on your BRP.

Setting Up Your UKVI Account

If you have not already, set up your UKVI account:

  • Visit GOV.UK's eVisa page
  • You will need your passport or BRP details and an email address
  • Create your account and link it to your immigration record
  • Once set up, you can view your status, share it with third parties, and update your details

This is especially important if your BRP is expiring or has already expired. Without a UKVI account, proving your immigration status becomes more difficult.

After Becoming a British Citizen

When you become a British citizen:

  • You receive a physical certificate of naturalisation at your citizenship ceremony
  • Your citizenship is recorded on a central Home Office database
  • Your previous immigration status (ILR, eVisa) is superseded by your citizenship
  • You apply for a British passport through HM Passport Office (a separate process)

Your certificate of naturalisation is your primary proof of citizenship until you receive your British passport. Keep it safe — replacement copies are available but cost a fee and take time.

Practical Tips

  • Set up your UKVI account before applying for citizenship
  • Ensure your digital records accurately reflect your immigration history
  • Keep your physical BRP until your citizenship is confirmed
  • After the ceremony, apply for your British passport promptly
  • Keep your certificate of naturalisation in a safe place — you will need it for the passport application
