CEFR B2 and IELTS Score Mapping
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) defines language proficiency levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). For UK visa purposes, the new B2 requirement corresponds to the following IELTS scores:
- B1 (previous standard): IELTS 4.0 to 5.0
- B2 (new standard): IELTS 5.5 to 6.5
- C1: IELTS 7.0 to 8.0
For UK immigration, the Home Office typically requires a minimum of 5.5 in each component (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) to meet the B2 standard. This is a significant step up from the B1 requirement of 4.0 in each component.
Which IELTS Test to Take
For UK visa purposes, you must take IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration), not the standard IELTS test. There are two versions:
- IELTS for UKVI Academic: Required for student visa applications and some professional registration routes.
- IELTS for UKVI General Training: Accepted for work visas, spouse visas, and settlement applications.
Both test the same four skills at the same level. The difference is the content of the reading and writing sections. For most immigration purposes, General Training is appropriate.
IELTS Life Skills is not accepted for B2. IELTS Life Skills only tests speaking and listening at B1 level. It does not cover reading and writing and does not reach B2. See the accepted tests guide for the full list of approved tests.
Component Score Requirements
To meet the B2 requirement for UK visas, you typically need:
- Listening: minimum 5.5
- Reading: minimum 5.5
- Writing: minimum 5.5
- Speaking: minimum 5.5
Note that the requirement is for each component individually, not an overall average. You must reach 5.5 in every skill. Check the specific requirements for your visa route on GOV.UK, as some routes may have slightly different thresholds.
The Gap Between B1 and B2
Moving from B1 (IELTS 4.0-5.0) to B2 (IELTS 5.5-6.5) is a significant step. At B1, you can handle basic everyday communication. At B2, you need to:
- Understand the main ideas of complex text
- Interact with native speakers with reasonable fluency
- Produce clear, detailed writing on a range of subjects
- Explain advantages and disadvantages of different viewpoints

How to Prepare
Key preparation strategies:
- Take a practice test first. This tells you your current level and which skills need the most work.
- Focus on weaker skills. Writing is often the hardest component to improve. Start early.
- Use official IELTS preparation materials. Cambridge publishes official practice tests.
- Consider a preparation course. See our English classes guide for options in the UK.
- Book early. IELTS for UKVI test centres fill up quickly. Book several weeks in advance.
See our B2 study tips guide for comprehensive preparation advice.
Test Day Tips
- Bring your passport (the same one you will use for your visa application)
- Arrive early to complete registration
- The test takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes
- Results are available after 13 days
Other Accepted Tests
IELTS is not the only test accepted for UK visas. Other approved tests include Trinity College London GESE and ISE, Pearson PTE Academic, and others. See the complete list of accepted tests and how to book a test.
Impact by Visa Route
The B2 requirement does not apply to all visa routes. See our B2 impact by visa route guide to check whether your specific route is affected.
