What you need to know

Biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) are collected as part of every spouse visa application. This guide explains what happens at the appointment, what to bring, how to prepare, and what comes next.

When Biometrics Happen in the Process

Biometrics are collected after you complete the online spouse visa application and pay the fees. The sequence is:

  • Complete the online application form
  • Pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
  • Upload your supporting documents
  • Book and attend your biometrics appointment
  • Wait for the decision

The processing time clock generally starts from the date you provide your biometrics, not from when you submitted the online form. This is an important point for planning purposes.

Where to Attend

Applying from Outside the UK

If you are applying from abroad, you attend a VFS Global visa application centre in your country. VFS Global operates centres in most countries. You can find your nearest centre on the GOV.UK visa application centre page.

Applying from Inside the UK

If you are applying from within the UK (switching or extending), you use the UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) system, currently operated by Sopra Steria. You can book appointments at UKVCAS service points across the UK.

Some UKVCAS locations offer walk-in appointments, but booking in advance is recommended to secure a convenient time. The biometrics appointment guide has more detail on both systems.

What to Bring

At a minimum, bring:

  • Your valid passport (the one used in the application)
  • Your appointment confirmation (printed or on your phone)
  • Your application reference number (GWF number)

You generally do not need to bring physical copies of supporting documents, as these are uploaded online. However, check the specific instructions from your visa application centre, as some locations may have additional requirements.

What Happens at the Appointment

The appointment is straightforward:

  • Your identity is verified against your passport
  • Your fingerprints are scanned digitally (all 10 fingers)
  • A digital photograph is taken (no glasses, neutral expression)
  • You may be asked to confirm some application details

The whole process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, though you may wait longer if the centre is busy. Some centres offer premium services (such as a dedicated lounge or faster processing) for an additional fee.

Passport Handling

When applying from outside the UK, some visa application centres retain your passport during processing. This means you cannot travel while your application is being decided. Options include:

  • Keep your passport: Some centres offer a "keep your passport" service (for an additional fee) that allows you to retain your passport while the application is processed. You may need to return it briefly if the visa is approved.
  • Submit your passport: The standard option. Your passport is held until a decision is made and the visa vignette (sticker) is placed in it.

If you need to travel for work or emergencies during processing, consider the keep-your-passport option.

After Biometrics

Once your biometrics are enrolled, your application is complete from your side. The Home Office begins processing your application. You can track your application status through the visa tracking service, though updates can be infrequent.

If the Home Office needs additional information, they will contact you through the visa application centre or by email. Respond to any requests promptly to avoid delays.

See the processing time guide for current expected timelines, and the decision letter guide for what to expect when the decision arrives.

eVisa and BRP Transition

As the UK transitions from physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRP) to digital eVisas, the role of biometrics is evolving. Your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) is linked to your digital immigration status. This means your visa status can be checked electronically by employers, landlords, and border officials.

Next Steps

Book your biometrics appointment as soon as you complete the online application and fee payment. Attend the appointment with your passport and confirmation. After biometrics, the waiting period begins — use this time to prepare for your move to or continued stay in the UK.
