Application Fee

The ILR application fee is set by the Home Office and published on GOV.UK. The fee has been increasing in recent years and is one of the highest in the UK immigration system.

For a detailed historical comparison, see our ILR cost breakdown guide.

Additional Costs

  • Life in the UK test: £50 per attempt. You must pass before applying. See our test guide.
  • English language test: If you need a new SELT test, expect £150 to £220. See our IELTS guide.
  • Biometrics: Standard UKVCAS appointment is included. Premium lounge services cost £200 to £800. See our biometrics guide.
  • Super premium service: Same-day or next-day decision for a significant additional fee.
  • Legal advice: Solicitor fees vary from £500 to £3,000+. See our DIY vs solicitor guide.

Family Costs

Each family member pays the full ILR fee separately:

  • 2 adults + 2 children: Four times the application fee, plus tests for both adults.
  • Children under 18 do not pay for the Life in the UK test or English test.

See our family ILR application guide and dependants guide.

Fee Waivers

Fee waivers are available in limited circumstances:

  • Applications on human rights grounds where the applicant is destitute.
  • Applications under the domestic violence provisions. See our domestic violence ILR guide.

Fee waivers are not available for standard Skilled Worker or spouse visa ILR applications.

Planning Your Budget

  • Start saving at least 12 months before your qualifying date.
  • Take the Life in the UK test and English test early to spread costs.
  • Check the current fee on GOV.UK shortly before applying, as fees change.
  • Consider the total cost of the immigration journey. See our hidden costs guide.

Comparing ILR Costs Across Routes

The ILR application fee is the same regardless of your visa route. However, the total cost of reaching ILR varies by route because of different visa fees, IHS payments, and test requirements along the way. See our ILR requirements guide for route-specific information.

This guide is general information, not immigration advice. Immigration rules change frequently. For advice on your specific situation, consult an OISC-registered adviser or immigration solicitor. Always check GOV.UK for the latest rules.
