How It Works
After you submit your ILR application online on GOV.UK, you will be directed to book a biometrics appointment with UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services). UKVCAS service points are located across the UK in major cities. This is a required step on your path to Indefinite Leave to Remain.
For general information on biometrics, see our biometrics guide and biometrics fee guide.
Booking Your Appointment
- Standard service: Free appointment slots at UKVCAS centres.
- Premium lounge: Enhanced service with priority processing, for an additional fee (typically £200 to £800).
- Super premium service: Same-day decision service available for some ILR applications, for a higher fee.
Book as soon as possible after submitting your application. Popular centres in London and other major cities fill up quickly. Check the visa fees guide for a breakdown of all costs including premium services.
What to Bring
- Valid passport.
- Current BRP card (if you have one).
- UKVCAS appointment confirmation (printed or on your phone).
- Supporting documents for your ILR application (if you are uploading them at the appointment). You will also need to have passed the Life in the UK test and met the English language requirement.

At the Appointment
The appointment itself is straightforward:
- Check in at reception with your confirmation.
- Your identity is verified against your passport.
- Your fingerprints are scanned digitally.
- A photograph is taken.
- If applicable, you can upload or submit supporting documents.
The whole process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. If your application is refused, see our visa refusal guide.
After the Appointment
After providing biometrics, the Home Office begins processing your ILR application. Standard processing takes approximately 8 weeks. See our ILR processing time guide.
With the transition to eVisas, you may receive a digital status rather than a new BRP card.
Can I Keep My Passport?
In most cases, yes. With UKVCAS, you can usually scan your documents and keep your passport. However, if you use certain services, you may need to leave your passport temporarily. Check with the specific UKVCAS centre. After receiving ILR, you may wish to apply for British citizenship.
