What Is the Youth Mobility Scheme?
The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) is a UK visa for young adults who want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. It is based on reciprocal agreements between the UK and participating countries. In many countries, it is informally known as a working holiday visa.
The YMS is not a long-term immigration route. It does not lead directly to settlement or permanent residence. But it gives you 2 years of nearly unrestricted work rights and is an excellent way to gain UK experience, build your career, and explore the country.
Eligible Countries
The full list of eligible countries changes as the UK signs new agreements. As of 2026, eligible nationalities include:
- Long-standing participants: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Monaco, San Marino, Iceland
- Added in 2024-2025: India, Andorra, Uruguay
- EU countries: Several EU member states joined through post-Brexit bilateral agreements. The exact list continues to expand.
For country-specific guidance, see our dedicated pages for Australia and Canada.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme, you must meet the following requirements:
- Age: You must be aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) at the time of application. Some nationalities (such as Australian and Canadian citizens) can apply up to age 35, following updated agreements.
- Nationality: You must be a citizen of an eligible country or territory.
- Savings: You must have at least £2,530 in savings to show you can support yourself when you arrive.
- No dependants on this visa: You cannot bring a partner or children.
- No previous YMS visa: You can only use this scheme once (with limited exceptions for some nationalities).
- Clean criminal record: You must not have any unspent criminal convictions.
The Ballot System
Some countries have a limited number of YMS places each year. For these nationalities, places are allocated through a ballot (a random draw). If your country uses a ballot, you must first enter the ballot and be selected before you can apply.
Countries that typically use a ballot include Japan and South Korea. Countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand generally have uncapped places, meaning you can apply directly without a ballot.
How Much Does It Cost?
The costs for the YMS visa in 2026 are:
- Visa application fee: £298
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year (£2,070 for 2 years)
- Total: approximately £2,368
You also need at least £2,530 in your bank account as proof of savings. This money does not need to be spent on anything specific — it just needs to be available. For a comparison with other visa fees, see our UK visa fees guide.
How to Apply
The application process depends on whether your country uses a ballot:
Countries Without a Ballot
- Apply online. Go to the GOV.UK Youth Mobility Scheme page and complete the application form.
- Pay the fees. Pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge online.
- Book biometrics. Attend a visa application centre to give your fingerprints and photograph.
- Submit documents. Provide your passport, bank statements, and any other required documents.
- Wait for a decision. Standard processing takes around 3 weeks.
Countries With a Ballot
- Enter the ballot. Register during the ballot window (usually January each year). You will be told if you are selected.
- If selected, apply online. You receive an invitation to apply and must submit your application within a set deadline.
- Follow the same steps as above (pay fees, attend biometrics, submit documents).
What Can You Do on a YMS Visa?
The Youth Mobility Scheme gives you broad work rights:
- Work for any employer in almost any job
- Be self-employed or freelance
- Study (including full-time courses)
- Volunteer
- Travel freely in and out of the UK
There are only two work restrictions: you cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.

You can access the NHS through the Immigration Health Surcharge you paid when applying. You do not have access to most public funds (benefits).
What You Cannot Do
- Extend the visa beyond 2 years
- Bring dependants (partner or children)
- Access public funds (benefits)
- Work as a professional sportsperson or coach
- Apply for this visa more than once (in most cases)
When Your YMS Visa Ends
The Youth Mobility Scheme visa lasts exactly 2 years. It cannot be extended. When it ends, you have several options:
Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa
If you find an employer willing to sponsor you, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK. This is the most common route for YMS holders who want to stay longer. You must apply before your YMS visa expires.
The Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor at the right salary level. If approved, it can lead to ILR after 5 years.
Other Options
- Switch to another visa. You can switch to other visa categories from inside the UK, such as a Student visa or Innovator Founder visa, if you meet the requirements.
- Leave the UK. If you do not switch, you must leave before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in a ban from returning to the UK.
- Apply for a different visa from outside the UK. You can always leave and apply for a new visa from your home country.
English Language
The Youth Mobility Scheme does not require you to pass an English language test to apply. However, if you later switch to a Skilled Worker visa or apply for ILR, you will need to meet the English language requirement at that stage.
Processing Times
In 2026, YMS processing times are approximately:
- Standard: 3 weeks from biometric appointment
- Priority (where available): 5 working days
Times vary by country. Check the processing time for your specific visa application centre on GOV.UK.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying over the age limit. You must be within the age range at the time of application, not at the time of travel.
- Not enough savings. You must have £2,530 in your account. This is checked against your bank statements, usually covering the 28 days before your application.
- Missing the ballot deadline. If your country uses a ballot, missing the registration window means waiting another year.
- Forgetting you cannot extend. Plan ahead. If you want to stay beyond 2 years, start looking for a sponsor or alternative visa well before your YMS expires.
- Applying twice. Most nationalities can only use the YMS once. A second application will be refused.
YMS for Australians and Canadians
Australia and Canada are the two most popular countries for YMS applicants. Key differences for these nationalities:
- Age limit: Both Australian and Canadian citizens can apply up to age 35 (not 30).
- No ballot: Places are uncapped. You can apply directly.
- Duration: The standard 2 years applies to both.
For detailed guidance, see our pages on the YMS for Australians and YMS for Canadians.
Comparing the YMS to Other Visas
The YMS is best if you want short-term flexibility. Here is how it compares to other routes:
- vs Skilled Worker: YMS needs no sponsor but is limited to 2 years with no path to ILR. The Skilled Worker visa requires a sponsor but leads to settlement.
- vs Student visa: YMS lets you work full-time without restrictions. A Student visa limits your working hours during term time.
- vs Ancestry visa: If you have a UK-born grandparent and are a Commonwealth citizen, the Ancestry visa gives you 5 years and a path to ILR. The YMS gives you only 2 years.
Next Steps
Check if your country is on the eligible countries list. If it is, confirm your age qualifies and start saving the required amount. Then apply through GOV.UK.
If you are already on a YMS visa and thinking about staying longer, explore the YMS to Skilled Worker switch as early as possible.
