View and Prove Your Immigration Status Online
What you need to know
- •The View and Prove service is on GOV.UK and is free to use.
- •Share codes are valid for 90 days and can be generated for employers or landlords.
- •BRPs are being phased out — eVisas via this service are the replacement.
- •You need your passport or BRP number and date of birth to access the service.
- •Employers and landlords should use share codes for right to work and right to rent checks.
The GOV.UK View and Prove service lets you check your immigration status and generate share codes for employers and landlords. With BRPs being phased out, this digital service is becoming the primary way to prove your right to work and rent. This guide explains how to use it, generate share codes, and troubleshoot common issues.

How to Access the Service
- Go to GOV.UK View and Prove your immigration status
- Enter your date of birth
- Enter your document number (passport, BRP, or national identity card)
- View your immigration status, including conditions of leave, expiry date, and work rights
The service is available 24/7 and is free. You can access it from any device with internet access.
Generating a Share Code
When you need to prove your status to someone else:
- Log in to the View and Prove service
- Choose what you want to prove: right to work, right to rent, or right to receive public services
- The service generates a share code (a combination of letters and numbers)
- Give the share code and your date of birth to the person checking your status
- They enter these on the GOV.UK employer or landlord checking service
Share codes expire after 90 days. You can generate new ones as needed. For right to work checks, employers should use the online service rather than just checking physical documents.
The Move to eVisas
The UK is transitioning from physical documents (BRPs, visa vignettes) to eVisas — digital immigration status. Key points:
- All BRPs expired by 31 December 2024, but your leave may continue
- Your immigration status exists digitally, linked to your passport
- You prove your status through the View and Prove service
- When you get a new passport, you must update your details on GOV.UK
See our eVisa guide for more detail on the transition. Check GOV.UK eVisa guidance.

Common Issues
- Cannot access the service: Ensure you are using the correct document number and date of birth. Try a different document if one does not work.
- Status not showing correctly: If your status is wrong or missing, contact the UKVI Resolution Centre.
- New passport: If you have renewed your passport, you must update your immigration status to link to the new passport.
- Employer does not accept the share code: Direct them to the GOV.UK employer checking service. Some employers are unfamiliar with the system.
For Employers and Landlords
If someone gives you a share code:
- Go to the GOV.UK online checking service (for right to work or right to rent)
- Enter the share code and the person's date of birth
- View their immigration status and conditions
- This provides you with a statutory excuse against penalties
