Updated 27 March 20266 min read

What you need to know

The Netherlands has a significant expatriate community in the UK. Brexit ended free movement for new Dutch arrivals. Importantly, Dutch nationality law generally does not allow dual citizenship, which is a critical consideration for Dutch citizens considering British citizenship.

Dual Citizenship Warning

This is a critical issue for Dutch citizens. The Netherlands generally requires you to renounce Dutch nationality when you voluntarily acquire another nationality. There are exceptions (for example, if your spouse is a national of the other country, or if renunciation is not possible). Before applying for British citizenship, seek legal advice about the implications for your Dutch nationality.

The Dutch Community in the UK

Approximately 60,000 to 80,000 Dutch nationals live in the UK, concentrated in London (particularly the City and west London), Edinburgh, and Cambridge. The Dutch community is well integrated into British professional life.
