Brexit and Czech Citizens

Before Brexit, Czech citizens could live and work freely in the UK. Since 1 January 2021, new arrivals must apply for a visa. Czechs who were in the UK before 31 December 2020 could apply for the EU Settlement Scheme.

The Czech Community in the UK

The Czech community in the UK is smaller than the Polish or Romanian communities but well established, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Czech-born residents concentrated in London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

After Arrival

Path to Settlement

After 5 years on a qualifying visa, apply for ILR. After 12 months with ILR, apply for British citizenship. The Czech Republic has permitted dual citizenship since 2014.
