What you need to know

You book the Life in the UK test online at GOV.UK. It costs £50, and you need to book at least 3 days ahead. Choose a test centre, pick a date, and pay by card. On test day, bring your passport or BRP and your booking confirmation. This guide covers the full booking process, what to do if you need to reschedule, and how to avoid common problems.

Before You Book

Before booking your test, make sure you are ready. There is no point paying £50 if you have not studied. See our study guide for advice on how to prepare, and our pass rate guide for an honest assessment of how hard the test is.

You should also check whether you are exempt from the test. If you are under 18, aged 65 or over, or have a qualifying disability, you do not need to take it.

When you are confident that you can consistently score above 75% on practice tests, it is time to book.

Step-by-Step Booking Process

Step 1: Go to the Official Booking Page

Visit gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. This is the only official booking website. Some third-party websites offer to book the test for you but charge an additional fee on top of the £50. There is no benefit to using these services.

Step 2: Create an Account

If this is your first time, you need to create an account. You will need:

  • A valid email address
  • Your full name as it appears on your ID document
  • Your date of birth
  • Your home address in the UK

If you have booked before (for example, if you failed and are rebooking), you can log in with your existing account.

Step 3: Enter Your Personal Details

Your name must match your ID exactly. If your passport says "Mohammed Ahmed Khan", your booking must also say "Mohammed Ahmed Khan". Even small differences (e.g., using a nickname or abbreviation) could cause problems on test day.

If you have recently changed your name (for example, after marriage), use your current legal name and bring supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or deed poll to the test centre.

Step 4: Choose a Test Centre

There are test centres across the UK. You can search by postcode or city to find one near you. You are not restricted to your local area. If your nearest centre has no availability, you can book at any other centre in the country.

Test centres in major cities (especially London, Birmingham, and Manchester) tend to fill up quickly. If you need a specific date, book well in advance. Rural centres often have more availability.

Step 5: Select a Date and Time

The system will show you available dates and time slots. You must book at least 3 days before your chosen date. Most centres offer morning and afternoon sessions.

Choose a date when you will be well-rested and not stressed. Avoid booking on a day when you have other commitments that might make you rush.

Step 6: Pay the Fee

The test costs £50. Payment is made online by debit or credit card. You will receive a confirmation email with your booking reference number. Save this email. You will need the reference number on test day.

Step 7: Confirmation

After payment, you will see a confirmation screen and receive an email. The email contains your booking reference, the test centre address, and the date and time. Print the confirmation or save it to your phone.

What to Bring on Test Day

On the day of your test, bring:

  • Valid photo ID: Your passport or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). The name must match your booking exactly. Driving licences and other forms of ID are not accepted.
  • Booking confirmation: Either a printed copy or the email on your phone.

Do not bring:

  • Mobile phones (you will be asked to switch it off and store it)
  • Notes, books, or study materials
  • Bags (some centres have lockers, but not all)
  • Food or drink (you will not be allowed to consume anything during the test)

Arriving at the Test Centre

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to take the test, and you will not receive a refund.

When you arrive, a member of staff will check your ID and booking confirmation. You will be asked to store your phone and any personal belongings. You will then be directed to a computer terminal.

The test begins with a short practice session of two sample questions. These do not count towards your score. They are designed to help you get comfortable with the touchscreen and the question format.

Rescheduling or Cancelling

If you need to change your test date:

  • More than 7 days before the test: You can reschedule free of charge or cancel for a full refund.
  • 3 to 7 days before the test: You can reschedule, but check the cancellation terms as refunds may not be available.
  • Less than 3 days before the test: You cannot reschedule or cancel. If you do not attend, you lose your £50 fee.

To reschedule, log in to your account on the GOV.UK booking website and select the option to change your booking. You will need to choose a new date and centre.

If You Need to Rebook After Failing

If you fail the test, you must wait at least 7 days before rebooking. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Each attempt costs £50.

Use the waiting period to review the areas you found difficult. Our guide to what to do after failing has specific advice on how to improve for your next attempt.

To rebook, simply log in to your existing account and make a new booking. You do not need to create a new account.

Special Requirements and Accessibility

If you have a disability or special requirement, you can request adjustments when booking. Available adjustments may include:

  • Extra time to complete the test
  • A separate room
  • Screen magnification or other visual aids
  • Wheelchair access

Contact the test centre directly before booking to discuss your needs. Not all adjustments are available at every centre. If you have a condition that prevents you from taking the test at all, you may be exempt.

Common Booking Problems

No Available Dates at My Local Centre

Try booking at a different centre. You are not restricted to your local area. Also try checking back at different times of day, as cancelled slots may become available.

Name on Booking Does Not Match ID

If you realise after booking that your name does not match your ID exactly, contact the test centre or update your booking online. Do not attend with mismatched details as you may be turned away.

Payment Failed

If your card payment fails, try a different card. Ensure your card is enabled for online payments and has sufficient funds. Some international cards may not be accepted.

Lost Booking Confirmation

Log in to your account on the GOV.UK website to view your booking details. You can also check your email for the original confirmation. If you cannot find it, contact the test booking helpline.

After the Test

If you pass, you will receive a pass notification letter at the test centre. This is an important document. Keep it safe because you need it for your ILR or citizenship application.

Your pass does not expire. You can use the same pass for both ILR and citizenship. There is no need to retake the test. For more on the test itself, including study tips and what to expect, see our complete Life in the UK test guide.
