The BN(O) Visa Route

The BN(O) visa was launched in January 2021 in response to changes in Hong Kong. It allows British National (Overseas) status holders and their close family members to:

  • Live and work in the UK without restriction
  • Study in the UK
  • Access the NHS (after paying the Immigration Health Surcharge)
  • Apply for ILR after 5 years

The visa can be granted for 30 months (with renewal) or 5 years upfront. Most applicants choose the 5-year option for simplicity.

Who Is Eligible

  • BN(O) status holders: You must hold BN(O) status (not just a BN(O) passport — the passport confirms the status)
  • Spouse or partner: Can apply as a dependant
  • Children under 18: Can join as dependants
  • Adult children (18-24): May qualify if part of the household

You must normally be resident in Hong Kong, the UK, or the Crown Dependencies at the time of application.

From BN(O) Visa to ILR

After 5 years on the BN(O) route, you can apply for ILR. The requirements include:

The first BN(O) visa holders who applied in 2021 became eligible for ILR from 2026.

From ILR to Citizenship

Once you hold ILR, the path to citizenship follows the standard requirements:

The total timeline from BN(O) visa to citizenship is approximately 6-7 years (5 years to ILR + 1 year holding ILR + processing time).

Practical Considerations for Hong Kong Nationals

  • China's position: China does not recognise BN(O) status or dual nationality. Becoming a British citizen may have implications for your relationship with Chinese authorities. Consider this carefully.
  • Hong Kong community in the UK: Significant communities exist in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and other cities, with support networks for new arrivals.
  • Professional qualifications: Some Hong Kong qualifications are recognised in the UK; others may require conversion or additional study.
  • Choosing where to live: Research areas with Cantonese-speaking communities and services if this matters to you.

Next Steps

If you are a BN(O) holder considering the move to the UK, start by applying for the BN(O) visa on GOV.UK. If you are already in the UK on the BN(O) route, plan ahead for your ILR application and eventually citizenship.
