Delayed Citizenship Application: What to Do
What you need to know
- •Standard processing is 6 months; many applications take 6-12 months or more.
- •Contact UKVI after the published processing time has passed.
- •Your MP can make enquiries through their dedicated Home Office channel.
- •Your ILR status remains valid while the application is pending.
Citizenship application delays are common. The standard processing time is 6 months but many applications take longer. If your application is delayed, you can contact UKVI, involve your MP, or seek legal advice. This guide covers all your options.

Normal Processing Times
The Home Office publishes expected processing times for citizenship applications. As of 2026, the standard target is 6 months for straightforward applications. However, actual processing times vary widely.
Factors that can extend processing time include:
- Security checks (can add weeks or months)
- Good character issues requiring investigation
- Missing or incomplete information
- High application volumes and staffing levels
- Complex immigration histories
Step 1: Check Your Status
Before taking action, use the online status tracking tool to check whether your application has progressed. Sometimes applications are approved but the notification has not reached you.
Also check whether the Home Office has sent you any requests for further information. These can go to spam folders or get lost in the post. If you missed a request, your application may be on hold waiting for your response.
Step 2: Contact UKVI
Once your application has exceeded the published processing time:
- Call 0300 123 2241 (UK) or use the online enquiry form
- Quote your reference number and the date you submitted
- Ask for a specific update on the status and any outstanding actions
- Consider using the paid enquiry service for a more detailed response

Step 3: Involve Your MP
Your Member of Parliament has a direct channel to the Home Office. Write to your MP explaining:
- When you applied and your reference number
- How long you have been waiting
- Any impact the delay is having on your life
- What response you have received from UKVI (if any)
MPs deal with immigration casework regularly and most have staff experienced in handling these enquiries. Their intervention often prompts a faster response from the Home Office.
Step 4: Legal Options
If your application has been delayed for an unreasonable period (typically over 12 months with no explanation), legal options include:
- Pre-action protocol letter: A solicitor writes to the Home Office warning that legal proceedings may follow if the delay continues
- Judicial review: A court can order the Home Office to make a decision within a specified timeframe. See our judicial review guide
- Formal complaint: Submit a complaint through the Home Office complaints procedure
Legal action should be a last resort. In many cases, a pre-action letter is enough to prompt the Home Office to act. Speak to an immigration solicitor before taking this step.
While You Wait
Your ILR remains valid while your citizenship application is pending. You can:
- Continue working without restriction
- Travel in and out of the UK (keep records of all trips)
- Access public services as normal
Be mindful that extended absences during the pending application could affect the assessment of your residence qualifications at the time the Home Office makes its decision.
