Why the Ancestry Visa Is Popular with South Africans
South Africa has a large population of British descent, particularly from English-speaking communities in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Western Cape. Many South African families can trace their ancestry back to British emigrants who arrived in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Ancestry visa is often the first choice for South Africans considering emigration because it offers more freedom than the Skilled Worker visa — no sponsor is needed, no minimum salary, and you can work in any role. Compared to Australian and New Zealand applicants, South Africans face one additional requirement: a TB test.
Eligibility
The standard Ancestry visa requirements apply:
- South African passport. You must hold a valid South African passport.
- UK-born grandparent. At least one grandparent must have been born in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.
- Aged 17 or over.
- Intention to work. You must plan to seek employment in the UK.
- Financial independence. You must support yourself without public funds.
TB Test Requirement
South Africa is on the UK's list of countries where applicants must provide a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate. You must:
- Get tested at a Home Office approved clinic in South Africa
- Obtain a certificate confirming you are clear of TB
- Submit this certificate with your visa application
The TB test certificate is valid for 6 months. See our TB test guide for more information on the testing process.
Documents for South African Applicants
In addition to the standard Ancestry visa documents, South African applicants should note:
- Unabridged birth certificates. South Africa issues both abridged and unabridged birth certificates. You need the unabridged version, which shows both parents' names. Order from the Department of Home Affairs if you only have an abridged certificate.
- Your parent's unabridged birth certificate. Again, this must show your grandparent's name.
- Grandparent's UK birth certificate. Order from GOV.UK if you do not have it.
- TB test certificate. From an approved clinic in South Africa.
- Financial evidence. Bank statements, employment letters, or savings evidence.
- Police clearance certificate. While not always required, it is advisable to obtain one from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The South African community in the UK is large and well-established, with community groups in London, Manchester, Bristol, and other cities. See our community groups guide for more.
Path to ILR and Citizenship
After 5 years, apply for ILR. You must meet the continuous residence requirement, pass the Life in the UK test, and meet the English language requirement. As a South African passport holder, you may be exempt from the English language test.
After ILR, apply for British citizenship after 12 months.
Dual Citizenship
South Africa does not generally permit dual citizenship for adults who acquire another nationality by voluntary act. If you become a British citizen, you may lose your South African citizenship unless you apply for retention of your South African citizenship beforehand. Seek legal advice on this. See our dual citizenship guide.
Next Steps
Start by getting your TB test and gathering unabridged birth certificates. Order your grandparent's UK birth certificate from GOV.UK early, as postal delivery to South Africa can take several weeks.
